If a reader is to be judged by the accuracy with which it reflects the state of sociology in its field, then the Sociological Review Monograph 29, The Sociology of Journalism and the Press edited by Harry Christian would be hard to fault. As a portrait, it comes warts and all and would doubtless have been to Cromwell's liking. The twelve papers in the volume vary greatly in terms of the quality of sociological thought and the elegance of their style. The strongest contributions are the outcome of investigative empirical research. Where attempts are made to provide a theoretical framework for the empirical work, assumptions tend to remain unstated.
