Education, globalization and citizenship
toward an additional component of citizenship
based on problematizing economic globalization

ABSTRACT
This thesis builds toward an additional component of citizenship and resultant forms of citizen action. It also identifies issues relating to education for citizenship.
The author problematizes current economic globalization. Following from a discussion/analysis of this area, the author suggests an additional component of citizenship. Central to this component is the problematization of current economic globalization.

The author uses the term problematization to describe a process of questioning and considering alternatives to presently accepted or unquestioned views of issues at hand. Through an examination of four conceptions of citizenship, the author also explores aspects of each which might contribute further to this additional component of citizenship.
This additional component emphasizes citizen engagement in the form of problematizing and questioning issues of current economic globalization. The author recognizes the complexity and challenges of pluralism and diversity throughout collective aspects of these processes.

There are educational implications of this additional component of citizenship. These implications are discussed at the end of the thesis. Above all, the author emphasizes that this additional component of citizenship is to be pursued through encouraging the consideration/problematization of current economic globalization.
